About the chain pulley block

A chain pulley block, also called a chain block or hand chain hoist, is the simplest way to lift a heavy load without electricity. You pull the hand chain, the gears inside turn the load sheave, and the hook rises slowly with a fraction of the effort a direct lift would take. Stop pulling and the brake holds the load where it is.

We sell chain pulley blocks in 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 ton. The 1 ton uses 6 mm load chain, the 2 ton 8 mm, and the 3, 5 and 10 ton use 10 mm chain. Up to 3 ton the block works on a single fall. The 5 ton uses two falls and the 10 ton four, which spreads the load over more lines of chain. That keeps the hand chain pull manageable, though you pull more hand chain for every metre the hook rises.

Standard lift is 3 m. If your hook point is higher, we can supply extra chain. Around Bengaluru and South India you will see these blocks in tool rooms, motor rewinding shops, borewell and pump work, vehicle workshops, fabrication yards and on construction sites, usually hung from a girder, a tripod or a beam trolley.

How to choose

Pick a capacity above your heaviest load, counting slings and fixtures too.
Up to 3 ton a single fall block gives a quicker lift; the 5 and 10 ton blocks use more falls, so they lift slower but stay easy to pull.
Measure from the hook point to the floor and order extra chain if 3 m is not enough.
If the load has to travel along a beam, add a push pull or geared trolley of equal or higher capacity.

Why does the 10 ton block lift so slowly?

It uses four falls of chain, so the load is shared between four lines. That keeps the hand chain pull manageable, but you pull more hand chain for each metre of lift.

Do I need a trolley with a chain pulley block?

Only if the load has to move sideways. For a fixed lifting point, hang the block from a hook, girder or tripod.

How do I check a chain block before use?

Look for stretched, twisted or damaged chain links, check that the hook latches close, and test the brake with a small lift before taking the full load.
