Safety on the job
- Sling capacity drops as the angle between sling legs widens. Allow for the angle when choosing the rating.
- Rinse slings and hoists with fresh water after salt exposure, dry them, and store them out of the sun.
- Read the sling label before every lift. A sling with a missing or unreadable label should not be used.
- Use tag lines to control swinging loads, and keep everyone clear of the path of the load.

What do the webbing sling colours mean?
The colour shows the working load: violet 1 ton, green 2, yellow 3, grey 4, red 5, brown 6, blue 8 and orange for 10 ton and above. The exact rating is also printed on the label.
Lever hoist or chain block for ship repair?
A ratchet lever hoist works at any angle and suits pulling, tensioning and holding. A chain pulley block is for vertical lifting from a fixed point above the load.
Is a stainless steel chain block worth it?
For boats, jetties and other areas exposed to salt water, yes. A painted block rusts quickly in those conditions, while a stainless steel block keeps working with less upkeep.
