Lifting Equipment for Steel Fabrication Shops

Fabrication shops spend a lot of time lifting steel: plate off the stack and onto the cutting table, sections into the jig, and finished frames onto the truck. A permanent magnetic lifter picks flat plate in seconds without slings and holds without power, so a power cut does not drop the load.

Steel & Fabrication

Heavier and odd-shaped work needs hoists and slings. A chain pulley block on a geared trolley positions a fabrication accurately for welding, two hoists working together can turn a job over, and a ratchet lever hoist pulls members into alignment. HMS supplies fabrication shops and steel yards across South India and Goa from our store on NR Road, Bengaluru, with delivery cost included in every quote. Send the plate size or job weight.

Common jobs and the right equipment

Lifting steel plate

A permanent magnetic lifter takes plate off the stack and onto the table, then releases it with a turn of the lever.

Positioning jobs for welding

A chain pulley block on a geared trolley places heavy fabrications exactly where the welder needs them.

Turning fabrications over

Two hoists with webbing slings can roll a job over in a controlled way so it can be welded from the other side.

Pulling members into line

A ratchet lever hoist pulls and holds steel members in alignment while they are tacked.

Running a shop runway

An electric chain hoist on an electric trolley covers a long shop bay for frequent, heavier lifts.

Safety on the job

  • Use magnetic lifters only on clean, flat ferrous steel. Paint, scale, rust, thin plate and curved surfaces all reduce holding force below the rated figure.
  • Make sure the magnetic lifter lever is fully in the locked position before lifting, and keep loads low while moving.
  • Protect webbing slings from sharp steel edges with sleeves or edge protectors. A cut sling must be taken out of use.
  • Never stand under a suspended load or use a hoist to hold a job while someone works beneath it.

Questions people ask

What capacity magnetic lifter should I buy?

Choose one rated well above your heaviest plate. The rated capacity applies to thick, flat, clean mild steel; thinner plate, rough surfaces or air gaps lower what it can safely hold. Tell us the plate size and thickness.

Can a magnetic lifter handle stainless steel?

Most stainless steel grades are non-magnetic or only weakly magnetic, so a magnetic lifter should not be used on them. Use webbing slings and a hoist instead.

Geared trolley or push-pull trolley for a fabrication bay?

A geared trolley is moved with a hand chain and gives better control with heavy loads. A push-pull trolley is moved by pushing the load and suits lighter work.
