Lifting Equipment for Construction Sites

On most building sites the daily lifting job is simple: get bricks, cement bags, sand, shuttering plates and steel from the ground to the floor being worked on. A clutch hoist or elem hoist on a hoist stand with a rope guide does this faster than a line of labourers on the stairs, and it can be moved up as the building rises.

Construction

Sites also need gear for heavier one-off jobs. A chain pulley block sets precast parts, lift machines and pumps in place. A cable puller drags heavy equipment across the site or tensions lines. Skid rollers move transformers and generators onto their plinths. HMS supplies all of this from our store on NR Road, Bengaluru, and ships to sites across South India and Goa with delivery cost included in the quote.

Common jobs and the right equipment

Lifting material to upper floors

Bricks, cement bags and shuttering go up in a bucket or platform on a clutch hoist or elem hoist. The hoist stand and rope guide keep the rope running true.

Setting precast and steel parts

Precast lintels, steel beams and staircase sections need careful placing. A chain pulley block hung from a secure point gives slow, controlled movement.

Pulling and tensioning

A cable puller or ratchet lever hoist drags equipment into position, pulls cables or tensions guy lines where there is no crane.

Placing generators and transformers

Skid rollers under the base carry the weight while a cable puller moves the unit onto its plinth.

Slinging site loads

Webbing slings grip pipes, bundles and equipment without crushing or scratching them.

Safety on the job

  • Nobody rides on a hoist bucket or platform, and nobody stands under the load while it is being lifted.
  • Fix the hoist stand firmly to the structure before use and check the wire rope for kinks, broken strands and crushing every day.
  • Barricade the area at the bottom of the lift and keep one person at the top and one at the bottom in contact.
  • Keep slings away from sharp edges or use protective sleeves, and never use a sling that is cut or frayed.

Questions people ask

Clutch hoist or elem hoist: which one does my site need?

Both lift material up the face of a building, and both are rated 1 ton with 8 mm rope and 40 m of lift. The clutch hoist is heavy duty and runs on a 3 HP three-phase motor. Tell us the lift height, the heaviest load per trip and the power you have on site, and we will recommend the right one.

Do I need a hoist stand?

Yes, unless you have a fixed, strong structure to mount the hoist on. The stand holds the hoist at the floor edge, and the rope guide keeps the rope aligned as it pays out.

Can a chain pulley block be hung from scaffolding?

Only if the scaffolding is designed for that load. A chain block must hang from a point that can safely carry the load plus the block's own weight, so check with your site engineer first.
